With Root, I sought to capture the essence of African womanhood in a medium as enduring and rich as the continent itself. The gnarled, organic form of the cherry wood root provided a natural foundation, a metaphor for the strength and resilience I associate with African women. By molding and carving this raw material, I transformed it into a representation of grace, dignity, and spiritual depth. The intricate dreadlocks, a symbol of cultural heritage and individuality, are meticulously carved, while touches of gold pigment allude to the inherent royalty and preciousness of the subject. My hope is that Root becomes a timeless tribute to the beauty and complexity of the African spirit.
